Cities/Chicago/Health & Wellness Standards

Last Updated December 22nd, 2021

Your health and safety continue to be our top priority. The City of Chicago has updated their COVID-19 mitigation requirements for gyms and other small businesses, and we have updated our Health & Wellness Standards accordingly.

Effective January 3rd, everyone ages 5 and older will be required to show proof of vaccination to enter First Ascent Chicago locations.

Proof of vaccination can be submitted in advance on our website here or shown to front desk staff on your next visit. Please note that medical or religious exemptions will need to submitted in advance. Once you’ve provided proof of vaccination, we will maintain a record of your vaccination status so that you do not need to share your vaccination proof during every visit.  If you do not wish for us to record your vaccination status, let our front desk staff know and we will check your proof of vaccination each time you visit the gym.

All other Health & Wellness standards will remain unchanged. We ask that you continue to care for your fellow climbers by wearing a mask while at the gym and by staying home if you are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms. If you do test positive for COVID-19 within 7 days of a visit to First Ascent, please be sure to notify us by emailing so we can perform appropriate contact tracing. We will be sure to keep your information confidential throughout this process.

Thank you for your continued support during these challenging times – we are truly grateful that you are a part of the FA community. We’ve heard from so many of you how essential your time at First Ascent is to your well being, and we’re glad to be able to continue to provide a place for you to climb, train, and connect. Climb on!

Here are our Health & Wellness Standards, presented in categories that will help you prepare for your next visit to your FA location of choice:

Rigorous Cleaning

A professional cleaning crew deep cleans each of our facilities every night, and our staff follow continuous cleaning protocols throughout the day.

Medical Grade Disinfectants

We use medical-grade, EPA-registered disinfectants designated effective against the COVID-19 virus for all continuous and deep-cleaning procedures.

Increased Air Circulation

Where possible, windows and doors at our facilities will be open to allow for additional fresh air circulation, and HVAC equipment will be set to allow the maximum amount of outside fresh air, achieving complete air replacement at least once every hour.

Facility Improvements & Adjustments

We’ve made some adjustments to the facility to promote the health and safety of staff and visitors, including adding plexiglass shields at the front desk, hand sanitizer stations throughout the facility, and signage to help promote healthy practices.

Check How You’re Feeling

If you’re feeling any symptoms of COVID-19, please stay home until you feel better.

Prepare Your Proof of Vaccination

Make sure to bring a digital or paper copy of your proof of vaccination with you. You can also submit your proof of vaccination here, and we will keep a record that you showed proof in our system so you no longer have to show proof for each visit.

Mask Up Please

Masks are required at all FA Chicago locations regardless of vaccination status.

Surgical, 2-ply cloth, and N-95 masks are all approved styles of masks. Bandanas, gaiters, and masks with vents are not permitted. If you forget to bring an approved mask along with you, we’re happy to provide you with one – just ask a First Ascent staff member.

Provide Proof of Vaccination

If you haven’t submitted proof of vaccination in advance, show your proof of vaccination to a front desk staff member.

Sanitize Your Hands

Hand sanitizing is recommended first thing when you enter. A hand sanitizer station will be placed right at the entrance for use when entering. We also encourage you to wash or sanitize your hands regularly during your time at the gym.

Optional Touchless Check In & Payment

Use touchless scanners to check in, or make purchases or payments using your card on file.

Liquid Chalk + Chalk Balls Only

Only liquid chalk and chalk balls will be permitted for use. Loose chalk is not permitted to improve overall air quality in the gyms.

Fist Bumps

Thanks for climbing with us and doing your part to help keep the FA community healthy. We look forward to seeing you again soon!

Contact us if you test positive for Covid-19

If you test positive for Covid-19 within 7 days of your last visit to First Ascent, please notify us by emailing

We will notify anyone who visited First Ascent during that session while keeping your identify and information confidential. If there is any evidence of further spread of COVID-19 happening within the gyms, we will quarantine that gym and notify all staff, members, and visitors immediately.
