USAC Sanctioned Speed Qualifier & Speed Clinics with Olexiy Shulga

Join us for 1 of only 2 scheduled USAC Speed Qualifier’s in the Midwest this year, and follow it up with a clinic (or 2!) with top U.S. Speed Climbing Coach Olexiy Shulga!

Competition is for USAC Youth B, A, JR or Collegiate members only, but clinics are open to anyone wanting to improve their speed climbing at any level! Olexiy is the U.S. Youth National Speed Climbing Coach, and considered one of the top experts in the country. Clinics are 3 hours long, and can be combined. Space is very limited to allow for significant personal interaction with, and analysis from, Olexiy!

FAQ’s

Can I sign-up the day of?

– No day-of Sign-ups the for the competition due to limitations of the Sport:80 USAC platform.

– Day-of sign-ups for the Clinics with Olexiy will be allowed on a space available basis.

 What ages is this for?

– USAC Speed QE Competition is for Youth B, A, JR and Collegiate categories (members) only.

– Clinics with Olexiy are for anyone wanting to work on their speed climbing!

 What are First Ascent’s Covid policies?

– As per Chicago mandate, all visitors to First Ascent must wear masks indoors at all time (vaccinated or not).

– As per Chicago mandate, all out-of-state visitors to the city must be fully vaccinated or show proof of negative PCR Covid test taken within 72 hours of arrival.

Is this on an “official” speed wall?

– Yes, this is an official 15M Walltopia speed wall with an official timing system.

What’s the format?

– Qualifying Round (time establishment) followed by a finals knock-out round of 4 or 8 (depending upon how many qualify from Quali’s)

Can I get a discount?

– Not on the competition, but on the clinics–YES!

       – Get 15% off your clinic(s) if your are registered for the competition!

       – Get 15% off if you register for 2 or more clinic sessions!

 Is the competition and the clinic(s) with Olexiy connected?

-Only in the fact that the competition qualifies you for a discount on the clinic(s).

 I’m in Youth C or Youth D  category, can I compete?

-Unfortunately, NO.  USAC rules limit to Youth B and above categories.

       – HOWEVER – You MAY participate in the clinics!!   

 Where/How can I warm-up?

– You may warm-up in the bouldering area after registration opens at 7:30am ( a little early should be fine, too)

– Practice runs on the speed wall (2 max) will begin at 8:00am.

 Will there be awards?

– Award ribbons to be provided by USAC–although we may have a few, fun surprise awards as well!

 Does my Competition or Clinic enrollment give me access to the rest of the gym?

– Yes, you may stay and use the gym the rest of the day. However, please note note that to use the gym after the competition you will need to:

  1. a) Take a quick orientation of the facility (provided by our general staff) if this is your first visit.
  2. b) Pass a belay test if you would like to use our rope area if you are not yet First Ascent belay certified.

 Do you have parking?

– Yes, we have parking onsite.

 Are there places to eat nearby?

– There is a Chipotle, Subway and grocery store essentially across the street. Other restaurants also within walking distance.

 Do you have hotels you can recommend?

– Nothing particularly close to First Ascent Avondale.

      –  If you have a car, we recommend staying somewhere with easy access to I90/94, and within 10-15 miles

 for a quick trip, or Airbnb in the city.      

      –  Without a car, we recommend using Airbnb.          

 Can I get there via Public Transit?

– Yes, but no train lines are particularly close. Please use the CTA website to determine your best options.
